Officially opened by (then) Ontario Lieutenant Governor Hilary M. Weston in 2,000, the Pathway of Peace was created to raise money for and awareness of the issue of violence against women and children. The Pathway of Peace is built through the centre of Temperance Park, just west of Aurora’s main intersection of Yonge and Wellington Streets. Bricks are sold for $25 (families and individuals), $100 (small business) and $1,000 (corporate). A second Pathway of Peace is to open in Scarborough this year to support women’s shelter Juliette’s Place.
Founded in 1978, Yellow Brick House (Project Hostel) is a 21 bed emergency shelter offering programs and services to more than 3,000 abused women and their children annually in York Region. Its 35 full and part time staff members provide multilingual support services in eight highly integrated programs and services with a funding base of $2.3 million. These programs work together to support women in the shelter, second stage housing, in support groups and those in their homes, to flee from, address and get support to deal with issues of violence and abuse. It needs to raise $600,000 gross annually to continue its programs and services.
